Each summer, GEAR UP offers a variety of STEM related activities for middle school students. Last summer, students participated in a CSI camp. Students worked throughout the week to solve the mystery of who broke the teacher’s cookie jar! In order to solve the mystery students analyzed finger prints, bite marks, as well as hair and writing samples from each suspect. Worcester police detectives visited to discuss the art of observation while conducting an investigation. Students spent a day at the UMASS Medical School laboratory where they conducted a number of finger printing tests. The week ended with a trip to the Worcester Superior Courthouse, where students met with DA Joseph Early Jr. as well as a Worcester Superior Court judge, who assisted the students with a mock trial.
